Colourful Flowers or Abstract Forms is a painting by the German painter Franz Marc

Painted between 1913 and 1914, Colourful Flowers depicts bold, red flowers amongst many sharp and soft images. Created during the Futurist movement, Franz Marc took inspiration from nature, and bought his own unique style to his painting.

Ahead of its time, Colourful Flowers could almost be set in a futuristic landscape. The smooth flowers contrasting greatly with the jagged edges behind. Franz Marc used colour in his pieces to echo that specific time in history.

Red was used primarily to portray violence and conflict and yellow, the other major colour in this works was often used to portray joy. Colourful Flowers is therefore a conflicting piece of art, which makes it fascinating to view.

Franz Marc favoured expressionism and abstract art which this painting contains both. It is an emotive piece depicting the beauty of nature, yet also that it is to be respected and can be dangerous.

The whole picture can also be interpreted as a complete vase of flowers. Using abstract principles, there are curved, arced shapes which are contrasted completely with the stark, angular shapes. In 1913 - 1914, this was a new way of painting and a style change for Franz Marc.

Franz Marc paintings invite people to see a distorted view of reality and all contain an aspect of boldness, whether it be in colour, or in the focal point of the painting. All of his paintings tell a story of the time and are still relevant today. All of this contributes to the fact he is a well known and respected artist completing many paintings during his life.
